Right now in Pittsburgh, a Black mother is going into labor without an advocate. A Spanish-speaking mom is trying to follow a doctor she can't understand. A woman inside Allegheny County Jail is preparing to give birth alone.

In Allegheny County, maternal complications hit hardest in the communities our healthcare system serves worst, and most of these emergencies are preventable.

MAYA shows up for the community.

We send trained doulas, mentors, and counselors to stand beside BIPOC and marginalized birthing people through pregnancy, birth, and the months after. Our care is free. It's trauma-informed. MAYA reaches these families the system has failed most. We work inside the Allegheny County Jail, providing counseling and group support to incarcerated women. We meet immigrant mothers in Spanish, in a medical system that wasn't built for them. We partner across Pittsburgh to fight for birth equity in a country where Black mothers are still three times more likely to die in childbirth than white mothers. In some Pittsburgh neighborhoods, 1 in 12 births ends in a serious maternal complication. 

No one should labor alone. No one should be unheard in the delivery room. No one should give birth behind bars without an advocate. The people we serve are the experts in their own lives. We just make sure they're not alone in the room.
