North Hills Affordable Housing dba HEARTH

A nonprofit organization

HEARTH's mission is to provide a range of supportive services and housing that empowers homeless families, who are survivors of domestic violence or other trauma to become independent, self-sufficient, and housed; to foster housing opportunities to prevent homelessness and encourage safe, affordable housing.

HEARTH was founded in 1989 after a group of service providers identified affordable housing as the foremost-unmet need in the area. The group raised almost $1 million to renovate a space to launch services and opened its doors in 1995. In 1997 North Hills Affordable Housing became HEARTH (Homelessness Ends with Advocacy, Resources, Training, and Housing). Now, 30 years later, HEARTH recognizes domestic violence and mental health issues as two of the most common causes of homelessness for women with children.

HEARTH provides safety for families escaping domestic violence and other traumas, offering not only transitional housing but also the comprehensive wraparound services critical for lasting stability. As one of just a few transitional housing providers in Allegheny County, HEARTH addresses the interconnected challenges of homelessness, domestic violence, and poverty through a holistic approach. Our programs include secure housing, mental health treatment, employment readiness, and financial literacy -all tailored to meet the unique needs of the women and children we serve. HEARTH also fulfills basic needs for families - food, clothing, child care and transportation.

Testimonials

Some of the best parts of living at HEARTH:

"The food, clothing, children's activities, incentives, family support, group activities, playground access, gardening, on-site pantry, clothing, gym, community room, daycare, laundry "

"My favorite parts are the sense of community among the residents and kids here and also the location. Though you are going through maybe the aftermath of one of the worst seasons in your life. You are not alone and don't feel judged or looked down upon. Our children get along well and are always happy to see each other. "

"I can say it's a perfect place for someone like me and my kids. Everyone is here for us. It's a life changing place for my family."
