When a neighbor in Pittsburgh hits a moment of crisis, help has to move fast. An eviction notice. A shutoff warning. An empty refrigerator and a week until payday.

That is when the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Council of Pittsburgh shows up. Not with a waiting list, but with a person. More than 850 volunteers, called Vincentians, serve neighbors across Southwestern Pennsylvania face to face, often right in their homes. They listen first, figure out what will make the biggest difference, and act. Rent assistance that keeps a family housed. Groceries that carry a household through the month. A bed, a winter coat, a utility payment made before the deadline.

This is person-to-person service, and it has endured for generations because it treats every neighbor with dignity.

It also comes full circle. When you shop or donate at our thrift stores, the proceeds help fund this work while keeping quality goods affordable for families across our region. Every part of SVdP feeds the mission.

One neighbor put it this way: "I am the only working individual in my home, with two other mouths to feed. The great men and women of SVdP have brought me groceries monthly, with extra help when some months get especially rough. I am always very thankful."
